On May 27, 2026, Protuoso Biosciences (“Protuoso”), an innovative synthetic biology start-up focused on developing next-generation multifunctional biologics, announced the close of an oversubscribed $9.5 million seed financing round. The company officially launched this month to pioneer a unique hub-and-spoke antibody development model. Led by Taya Venture and Darwin Ventures, with participation from NSG Ventures, SEEDS, and other investors, the proceeds will be used to advance Protuoso’s AI-driven protein engineering platform and a broad therapeutic pipeline across cardiometabolic, oncology, and autoimmune diseases.

The MUXBODY™ Advantage: Engineering Next-Generation Therapeutics

With its name derived from a portmanteau signifying “protein virtuosos,” Protuoso centers its innovation on the proprietary MUXBODY™ platform. These fully recombinant fusion proteins are designed to seamlessly integrate diverse protein modalities, including antibodies, cytokines, peptides, and other signaling modules, into a single therapeutic capable of engaging multiple biological mechanisms simultaneously.

By integrating sophisticated computational protein engineering with synthetic biology and predictive modeling, Protuoso streamlines the discovery process by effectively constraining the design space. The modular nature of these “mix-and-match” MUXBODY structures allows the company to rapidly develop multi-specific biologics tailored for complex diseases, particularly those where single-pathway interventions have historically yielded limited efficacy and durability. This technical synergy facilitates the creation of therapies characterized by coordinated multi-modal activity, programmable protein logic, and optimized pharmacokinetic profiles.

“Most biologics today are limited to a single mechanism or modality, as combining multiple functions into one molecule has historically been very complex to engineer,” said Tim Lu, Ph.D., Co-Founder and Chairman of Protuoso Biosciences. “Advancements in synthetic biology, AI, and protein design have now enabled us to build a platform that reduces this complexity and achieves scalable development of multifunctional biologics. We believe this approach will unlock more effective therapies for complex diseases and expand the range of what biologics can achieve.”

Tackling Complex Diseases via a Virtual, Hub-and-Spoke Pipeline

Protuoso is building a therapeutic-agnostic hub-and-spoke model. Its core protein engineering platform serves as the central “hub” to generate differentiated therapeutic assets across areas of high unmet medical need. Programs are then advanced through focused “spokes,” enabling parallel development and early business development engagement at the asset level. By integrating in-house protein engineering expertise with a global network of top-tier industry advisors, Protuoso operates on an integrated virtual model that significantly reduces the time and cost of de-risking innovative assets.

“Many of the largest disease areas such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and autoimmune diseases are fundamentally driven by interconnected biology, but most drugs still act on a single pathway,” noted Willie Xiang, Co-Founder, President, and Chief Operating Officer of Protuoso Biosciences. “Our platform gives us the ability to engineer multiple modalities into a single molecule to target a variety of disease mechanisms. Our flexible hub-and-spoke company structure lets us efficiently translate our diverse MUXBODY programs into the clinic.”

Currently, the company is advancing programs in cardiometabolic diseases—targeting upstream systemic obesity alongside downstream end-organ pathologies—and oncology, where it is developing next-generation “armored” immune cell engagers to overcome solid-tumor challenges such as immune exhaustion. The company is also expanding rapidly into other therapeutic arenas, including autoimmune disorders.

Strategic Backing for Long-Term Value Creation

The company’s hub-and-spoke structure is meticulously designed to support both internal development and external transactions, allowing individual programs to be partnered, spun out, or advanced independently. This framework drives capital efficiency while creating multiple value inflection points across their multi-asset pipeline.

“We’ve invested in leading healthcare funds and global biotech companies, and Protuoso reflects the qualities we look for in an early-stage life sciences platform,” stated Christopher Shen, General Manager at Taya Venture. “The combination of a transformative platform technology, an experienced team with a proven track record of advancing multiple high-value assets into the clinic, and a clear path to clinical development forms a strong foundation for long-term value creation.”

Laura Brege, a Senior Advisor to Protuoso and BridgeBio, echoed this confidence: “Protuoso is being built with the rigor and discipline of successful biotech organizations. The company’s capital-efficient business model, combined with deep platform innovation and R&D execution, uniquely positions the company to address profound unmet needs and significantly improve patient outcomes worldwide.”
